When do Codex usage limits reset?

Your account may have separate short-term and weekly usage limits. Check /status in Codex CLI or Settings → Usage for the windows and reset times that apply to you. This site follows public global reset announcements, which are separate from your personal usage windows.

Checked against the OpenAI Help Center on 10/7/2026. OpenAI changes these rules; if this page and OpenAI disagree, go with OpenAI.

The 5-hour window

Where a 5-hour limit applies, it is separate from the weekly allowance. The availability and size of each allowance depend on your plan and account; check the usage panel for your current limits.

The weekly window

The weekly limit sets how much included usage you get over a weekly period. The period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after a reset, and the next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that request. Because the clock starts on your own first request, there is no weekly reset time shared by all users. When both limits apply, you need allowance left in both to keep working.

Global resets are not your own window

A global (automatic) reset refreshes the eligible limits named in OpenAI's announcement for many accounts at once. You don't apply it yourself, and it doesn't appear as a saved reset in Settings. These resets are usually announced on X by Codex lead Tibo (@thsottiaux). This site tracks those posts, and the history page lists each reset with its source.

Banked resets

Banked resets are saved for later use. A full reset refreshes eligible usage windows and changes the weekly reset date. Eligibility and expiry depend on the offer and account; check the expiry displayed in Settings → Usage.

Paid instant resets

Plus and Pro customers may be able to buy an instant reset in the desktop app's Usage settings, or from an offer after reaching the weekly limit. It restores both the 5-hour and weekly allowance right away, starts a new weekly period at your next request, and can't be saved for later. It pulls your normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding extra usage. Availability depends on the account and billing country.

How to check your own reset time

In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status to see the limits that apply to your account and when they reset. Settings and the usage dashboard also show which allowance is used up, your credit balance and any reset time. OpenAI Support does not reset usage limits on request.

Questions

  1. When does the Codex weekly limit reset?

Seven days after the first request of your current weekly period. The period starts with your first request after a reset, so the time differs for each account. /status shows yours.

  2. Does a new 5-hour window restore my weekly limit?

No. The two limits refill separately. If your weekly allowance is used up, a new 5-hour window won't let you continue; you need the weekly reset, a global reset, a banked reset, an instant reset or credits.

  3. Did Codex reset today?

The live status page answers that from Tibo's public posts and shows the time of the last completed global reset and any scheduled one.

  4. Do banked resets expire?

Yes. Check the expiration shown in your account or offer. An unused reset cannot be restored after it expires.

  5. Can OpenAI Support reset my Codex limit?

No. The OpenAI Help Center says Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. Wait for your reset, or use a banked reset, an instant reset or credits if your account offers them.
